As I continue to prepare for the release of my debut fantasy novel THE FORBIDDEN PARALLEL, I wanted to share more details about its soundtrack, which is really shaping up — thanks to the efforts of many hands, ears, and head nods.
A soundtrack for a novel? Why on earth does a fantasy novel need a soundtrack filled with progressive punk and indie rock songs? Don’t you like to sleep?
There are no answers to those questions.
Here’s what I do know: the songs came out of the same brain at the same time as the novel did, written on and off over a span of two years. While most are instrumental, three songs feature guest vocalists and have lyrics inspired by the book’s narrative.
Interestingly, some of those lyrics came from half-finished songs that were floating in my brain right before I started the novel. I revisited them and was shocked to see how well they fit. Neat to see some of the ways my brain was preparing me for this thing.
The album will be released under the band name Kevin Carver & the Parallels, which thankfully includes the instrumental contributions of more than just me. Robbie Fraser, a long-time co-conspirator, is a percussionist and songwriter who helped elevate these songs far above what I thought was possible, and John Miller, who plays bass guitar and kindly contributes vocals, took them even further.
All 12 songs are currently getting mixed and will soon be mastered. After that, I will plan on properly sharing full singles and making more videos. For now, enjoy this preview (i.e., album trailer). SO excited to get these tunes out in the world.
Next step: planning a proper worldwide multimedia release strategy!
